Motion Capture Technology

Motion Capture is a technology that is most commonly associated with movies and gaming, and rightfully so, since for years these were the only sectors that extensively made use of it. However, as technology has evolved today, there is scope for it to be used in many different sectors. Brands don't have to restrict themselves to using MoCap only when they need animations for videos or a game. Today, several industries like healthcare, sports, and more can benefit from it.

What is Motion Capture Technology?

Motion capture, or MoCap, is a technology that is used to record or rather "capture" movements of people, animals, or objects. It is then converted into digital animations. To capture these movements, sensors, cameras, or markers are used. Motion Capture makes it easier to animate complex movements as the animator doesn't have to manually animate each limb frame by frame. Thus, it also saves them a lot of time and effort. Additionally, since these movements mirror the real world, they are highly accurate.

What Kind of Motion Capture Technologies do Businesses Use

Collaborative workspace with creative focus

There are two main types, or rather ways to capture motion, these are either done through optical or non-optical systems. These are then further divided into the following 5 subsystems:

  • Optical Motion Capture: It typically uses multiple infrared cameras to track reflective or active markers placed on an actor's body.
  • Markerless Motion Capture: Instead of using suits or markers, this system relies on AI and computer vision to track movement from regular or depth-sensing cameras.
  • Inertial Motion Capture: It makes use of IMU sensors like gyroscopes and accelerometers. These are attached to the actor’s body to measure rotation and acceleration.
  • Magnetic Motion Capture: It uses electromagnetic fields to track the sensors placed on the body.
  • Mechanical Motion Capture: In this system, the actor wears a physical skeletal-like exoskeleton that comes with the sensors pre-equipped. Instead of using cameras, the mechanical joints on the rig are fitted with angle sensors to track when the actor bends their arms or legs. These sensors then capture the degree of rotation.

Why More Businesses are Starting to Use Motion Capture Technology

According to the "3D Motion Capture Market Research Report" done by PW Consulting in 2025, the 3D Motion Capture Market is expected to grow at a 13.25% CAGR through 2032.

Similarly, another study by Mordor Intelligence on "3D Motion Capture Market Size & Share Analysis" suggests that the 3D motion capture market size is estimated to grow from USD 319.13 million in 2026 to reach USD 593.98 million by 2031.

As such, we can expect more industries aside from entertainment or sports to start adopting it. Especially since AI is also advancing at a rapid pace, we could see AI integration in existing MoCap processes or augmentation of traditional captures.

How Motion Capture Technology Helped Our Client

 custom avatars of cricket fans

Star Sports, Airtel - Bridging The Gap ft. Motion Capture (Entertainment)

For IPL 2023, Star Sports and Airtel teamed up to give sports fans across the country the "Ultimate fan" experience while also showcasing the speed of Airtel 5G. They partnered with us, Ink In Caps, to create custom avatars of cricket fans that would have real-time interaction with their favorite cricket stars.

The fan avatars that were created weren't rigid and could track body movements of all types, from simple actions like jumping or waving to more complex movements like hitting the "helicopter shot". Additionally, to keep the fan interactions more immersive, we also captured the facial expressions in detail, so that when the fan was laughing or talking, it would feel more accurate to an in-person interaction.

This project resulted in:

  • Being the first-ever real-time interaction between cricket stars and fan avatars done on Indian television.
  • Avatars of fans from 10 different locations across the country engaging in live interactions

What Industries can Benefit from MoCap Technology?

Entertainment

This is the sector that has been using Motion Capture Technology for the longest and also the one that has benefited from it the most. In gaming, MoCap can be used to capture complex movements of an actor. These movements can then be transferred onto a main or non-playable character to save animators from having to animate each individual action.

Another sector in the Entertainment industry that benefits a lot from this technology is the movies and television industry. It could be used to capture an actor's facial expressions or other performances and placed on non-human characters like Gollum, Groot, etc.

Going back to gaming, or more specifically, for live-streaming, a relatively recent application of MoCap technology can be seen with V-Tubers or other Virtual influencers. This lets the influencer or the content creator have their performance animated onto their virtual avatar in real-time. The application of Motion Capture here is on a much smaller scale.

Sports

The sports industry can benefit from Motion Capture Technology by tracking an athlete's biomechanics in real time. It then allows coaches to identify inefficiencies, optimize techniques, and develop personalized training programs. Additionally, it can also be used for movement analysis to improve an athlete's performance while reducing injury risks.

Healthcare

Motion capture technology can be used in the healthcare industry for rehabilitation, physical therapy, and medical research. For example, if a patient has had an accident, doctors or professionals can use MoCap to check the patient's mobility, identify any movement disorders, and develop personalized treatment plans.

Real Estate & PropTech

Real Estate can also make use of Motion Capture Technology, most commonly for Virtual Staging. This lets developers add 3d models or avatars in 3d spaces to populate them.

For example, different movements of actors could be captured, like them working out in public spaces like gyms. As such, when a property has a private gym as one of its amenities, it could use this technology to showcase it while making the virtual walkthrough more immersive.

Depending on your project's needs, you can choose whether you wish to prioritise capturing detailed facial expressions, full-body movements, or both. Facial motion capture allows you to track subtle eye movements, frowns, smiles, or other expressions. While full-body movement would be useful when you want to capture movements like running, jumping, or other common actions. These could then be modified and added to different characters or creatures and used accordingly in your projects.

Yes, it can be integrated into virtual production workflows to capture an actor's movement in real time, which lets the production team visualize scenes on the spot. It is beneficial because this technology reduces extensive post-production work.
