Interactive NFC Placard Technology & Interactive Projection Mapping
India Mobile Congress (IMC) stands as the country's premier technology showcase, annually attended by industry leaders and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. For the 2024 edition, Reliance Jio approached Ink In Caps with a critical mission: to create an immersive, interactive experience showcasing their groundbreaking AI model, JioBrain, and their 5G Intelligent Village initiative. The objective was clear—move beyond passive information consumption to create memorable interactions that would drive genuine understanding and retention among visitors, while positioning Jio at the forefront of India's AI and telecommunications revolution.

The objective was clear—move beyond passive information consumption to create memorable interactions that would drive genuine understanding and retention among visitors, while positioning Jio at the forefront of India's AI and telecommunications revolution.
Our solution integrated cutting-edge interaction design with compelling storytelling across two distinct experiences. For JioBrain, we designed a multi-dimensional interaction system centered around a massive LED display complemented by three interactive kiosks. Each kiosk featured custom-designed acrylic placards representing different industry applications of JioBrain. The user journey was intentionally intuitive: visitors approached the kiosk and selected an industry-specific placard; upon placing the placard on the designated area, NFC technology triggered a sequence of animations; the kiosk display illuminated with relevant animations while synchronized content appeared on the main LED screen; custom-developed 2D and 3D animations explained each use case, highlighting problem statements and JioBrain's innovative solutions. For Jio's rural technology initiative, we created an interactive wall utilizing projection mapping with touch sensitivity. Recognizing the limitations of standard 2D presentations, we implemented a 2.5D isometric design approach that expanded the visual playground and created depth. The experience focused on four transformative pillars: Smart Agriculture, Smart Healthcare, Smart Education, and Smart Panchayat. Visitors could touch different areas of the village, triggering animations that demonstrated how 5G technology integrates into rural settings while preserving cultural authenticity. This approach made abstract technological concepts tangible and relatable.
Our technical execution demanded precision across multiple disciplines. We developed a custom Unity-based application managing complex interaction flows and media playback. NFC integration involved programmed NFC cards embedded in each placard, with readers positioned strategically behind each kiosk. Our team handled end-to-end content creation, developing all animations by combining 2D and 3D elements to create a visually cohesive narrative. For the 5G Village experience, we implemented calibrated projection mapping with touch-response capability, all while ensuring synchronized playback coordinated across multiple screens with perfectly timed transitions.
The project presented several formidable challenges throughout its lifecycle. During pre-event development, we focused on ensuring the NFC system could handle continuous interactions from large crowds, precisely aligning digital animations with physical placard engravings, and developing a robust, crash-resistant software solution for a high-stakes environment. On-site implementation brought additional difficulties as we set up sensitive technology amidst ongoing booth construction, with fabrication work creating less-than-ideal conditions. We faced debugging intermittent NFC recognition issues where placards needed precise positioning, managing system crashes during critical moments—including an LED panel failure minutes before Anant Ambani's visit, and maintaining touch sensitivity calibration for the projection wall despite subtle physical movements of the fabricated surface. These challenges culminated in several sleepless nights as our team raced against time to ensure flawless operation for the high-profile inauguration.
The IMC showcase exceeded all expectations by attracting over 170,000 visitors from across the globe. The presentation to key Reliance leadership, including Anant Ambani, was successful despite initial technical challenges. The experience established a benchmark for interactive technology presentations at the event, transforming complex technological concepts into accessible, engaging experiences. The project positioned Jio as an innovation leader in India's AI and telecommunications landscape and stands as a testament to how thoughtful interaction design can transform technical showcases into meaningful human experiences that drive both understanding and emotional connection.
