Most people believe the Apple Vision Pros are VR devices, and they’re both right and wrong; it's easy to confuse them for VR since they cover your eyes like one, but they aren’t showing you a virtual world. The experience the Vision Pros provide is called Mixed Reality (MR); as its name suggests, it is a mix of the capabilities of VR and AR—an experience where you witness the real world through a virtual lens. Most people believe that the Vision Pros are the first-ever MR headsets, but that's not true. Microsoft had developed the HoloLens back in 2016 (the good old days; can’t believe that was 9 years ago now), although the Vision Pros were the ones that put the idea of MR headsets on everyone's radars. Now multiple headsets offer MR experiences like the HTC Vive XR Elite and the Meta Quest 3.

While it might not have been the next iPhone, the Vision Pro made a statement: the future of communication is hands-free. But communication isn't the only thing the Vision Pro is good at; less than a     commercial product, it acts more like a developer kit, giving early adopters and visionaries a chance to get their hands on what could be the future of many fields like communication, entertainment, and marketing. The Vision Pro isn’t just a gimmick that no one will care about in a few years; it is a proof of concept, a transformative tool that will change businesses across industries.

Workplace collaboration

Working from home may be comfortable, but it often isn’t convenient; sometimes it can feel like you’re not a part of the office because, despite the benefits, remote work has led to challenges such as burnout, with 69% of remote employees reporting increased stress due to digital communication tools. But imagine you put on a headset for a meeting, and you’re surrounded by all your colleagues from the comfort of your home. This could not only make employees feel more fulfilled and connected to the rest of the team but also make collaboration much more seamless, increasing productivity while making employees feel more connected whether they’re a few hundred or a few thousand kilometres away.

Real estate tours

Using services like V-Estate that allow you to view a 3D digital twin of properties to assist in sales, along with headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, can take the experience up to another level. Imagine going to an experience centre that has a view of where the tower is being built. It doesn’t look like much, but when you put on the headset, you see the tower in all its glory, scraping the sky, and then the agent switches your perspective to the individual flats. You walk around it like you’re actually in there; you can see it all right in front of you. This kind of experience would not only have all prospects in awe but also make them feel more confident in their purchase decision.

Right to repair

When we buy something, it’s a given that we’d want to be able to fix it on our own. Unfortunately, instructions can be hard to come by, and even when available, following them often feels like deciphering a puzzle. MR headsets like the Apple Vision Pro could revolutionise this experience by offering intuitive, immersive repair guidance. Imagine wearing the Vision Pro while repairing a device. Instead of flipping through a manual or pausing a YouTube video repeatedly, you’d see real-time AR overlays on the device itself. This approach wouldn’t just empower users to repair their devices confidently; it would also reduce electronic waste by encouraging repairs over replacements. Companies could even develop their own MR repair apps for their products, providing customers with a seamless support experience and extending product life cycles.

Virtual events

Concerts and other exclusive events often have a hard limit on how many people can experience them, and that is the capacity that the venue possesses. With how small the world has become, more and more concert venues get filled to the brim because everyone wants to see their favourite artists perform live. To remedy this and to create more revenue out of the concerts, pay-per-view passes can be sold that allow you to experience it live using an XR headset. Not only will this make events in general more accessible to the masses but also create another source of revenue for concertgoers.

The Apple Vision Pro has shown us a glimpse of what the future could look like a world where Mixed Reality seamlessly integrates with everyday life, reshaping how we work, communicate, and experience the world. It’s not just a device; it’s a paradigm shift. While still in its early days, this isn’t a passing trend or a fleeting gimmick. It’s a platform for innovation, a tool that invites businesses, developers, and creatives to reimagine what’s possible. The Vision Pro has laid the foundation for the next era of immersive, human-centred innovation. The question is no longer if MR will change the world, it's how soon.
